Giving the Kids an Updated and Colorful Bathroom Makeover!

We decided to take a family vacation this weekend and we traveled to Snow Shoe West Va.  Where it was 2 degrees at times with a wind chill that put us in the negatives!  I pretty much ran back inside after two trips down the mountain. 

 

The kids on the other hand where so much braver than I was.  They had a blast learning how to ski and today the weather was great!  The sun came out, the temperatures rose up to the 40's, and I was able to stay out a little longer and ski.  So now as my family heads back out in the cold evening weather to get in their last ski session, I decided to put a little time into deciding some things for my upcoming project that I am really happy about...  THE KIDS BATHROOM!

 Actually, right now we have a plain white plastic shower curtain hanging up since my husband thought this one was not "kid like" and he took it out.  So a blob of beige and white is what we are actually working with.  The floor is laminate, but I am hoping to do a gray slate tile floor.

We previously did this type of board and batten treatment in our First Floor Coastal Bathroom Renovation and still love how it looks!  I figured with some silver hooks and numbers, just like the amazing photo above, both of my kiddos and a guest could have their own towel hook.  The guest meaning my sister who likes to use the floor as her towel holder ;-)

I'm leaning towards the Repose Gray since I think it will give more of a contrast against the navy and white striped shower curtain.

What do you think of the look of two shower curtains instead of one?  It just turns your bathroom into a picture window basically and I kinda dig it!  Plus as a bonus, my kids would like it, since they are sorta scared of closed shower curtains, lol.  They always push open the curtain and I always close it so I can see the pattern, so now we could all be happy.

 

 

I wanted the West Elm Navy and White shower curtain, but realized if I was going to do two curtains, I would need to go with a more budget friendly option, so I chose Target's striped Navy and White Shower Curtain for $14.99 each.

Here it is online, although I couldn't find it on Target's website, it is in stores.  It is a cotton blend material.

 

What I thought I would do to make it more of a custom made piece is add a solid piece of navy blue material to the bottom of each curtain so that the Navy blue piece will go up to the top of the bath tub and the striped material will go the rest of the way up.  It's the same affect that you give to windows to make them feel much larger than they really are.   To give you an example, here are the curtains that I had made for a client recently for her Living Room Makeover. 

 

 

 

The sandy beige color meets the steely blue tone right at the window sill where my navy material will meet the navy and white striped material at the top of the bathtub.  I think it will make everything look finished off.

 

I can't wait to get in there to start making some changes, freshen things up, and make it really nice for my kids!

Target is calling!

Where did I go yesterday?  Say it with me..... TARGET.  How did you know?  Well, it was either there or TJMaxx or HomeGoods.    And well, I kinda went to TJMaxx too, but it is only for you guys that I jump into my car, drive all the way to the store, and walk down all those isles of pillows and rugs and accessories.  OH THE AGONY! 

Naaaahh.  It's really for me!  Sometimes I just love to go to a place where you don't have to hear, "MOM, did you sign my homework?"  "Mom, why is my smoothie so watery?"  "Mom, why did the dog just leave poop streaks on the side of the couch."

See what I mean, so Target just quietly calls to me, "Helen, come, relax and stroll around with some coffee."   OK Target if you insist.

So yesterday, I went with my dear friend, our coffee's in hand and found some new things that I really liked.

Curtains/Shower Curtains

 If I've said it once, I've at least said it twice.  Right?  Nate Berkus gets me, he just gets me!  Softness, color, and texture.  That's all I ask for Nate and you deliver.

This here is navy and white striped shower curtain that said, "take me home, I will look great in the kids bathroom."  Apparently a lot of decor and stores for that matter just seem to talk to me.  And yes I do answer back, cause that would be rude if I didn't.

So, I brought him home.  The first room in transition is the kids bathroom.  The walls are beige  the counters are cream, and the current shower curtain is white.  Blahh!  I am thinking this shower curtain, some board and batten, hooks for towels.  I think a design board is in order. 

These are not large, they are little clipboards that I think would go great at the bottom of your organizational command center.  You don't have an organizational command center?  What is wrong with you ;-)  I don't have one either, YET.  You could give each person their own. Use them for permission slips, things to be signed, lunch money, receipts, whatever.

I'm thinkin, kids art space to hang all of their masterpieces. Or maybe on the bottom of a cork board so kids can hang photos of them and friends.

 This is the mirror I want.  I can use two of them side by side in my master bath or the kids bath instead of the big huge rectangle plain mirror if the size is right.  They may be a smidge small.  Say that 5 times fast, Smidge small, smidge small... You know you're doing it!
 

My friend near took out a lady passing by just to get to this beauty.  Target is catchin on to all the DIY windows people have been creating.  I saw a repurposed one the other day full of mirrors.  It was so pretty.

This one would be great with a black and white pic in each window frame or one large black and white pic behind all four frames. 

Citron, Celadon, Celery stick, I don't know what you would call that color, but I like it.  It gives me the feeling of spring.

It's like someone walked around my house, picked out all of the colors and threw it on a shade.  Ok I love it!  It's springy, it's beachy, it's me.

I like all three of these pieces.  The one in the middle is a brighter yellow in person.  I think any of these would spruce up a place and look great on a shelf.  Don't you?

Particularly this one!  I would love this in my kitchen or on my reclaimed wood shelving in my morning room.  What shelving you say?  Exactly!  I still haven't gotten around to it, but I will very soon, hopefully ;-)

Let's head over to TJMaxx!  

 Horrible picture clarity I know, but look past that and see what this subway art said to me.  "Eat dessert first" and "Say yes to chocolate."  Is it sad that these are the first sayings that caught my eye and not "Take the High Road" or "Win with Grace."  If you have seen me play basketball and win against my neighbor, who always puts up a fight, well you would know why "Win with Grace" is not on the top for me.  I rub it in with that girl every chance I get.  And now thanks to my husband, who so kindly pointed out that her and I only call each other "girl", instead of our given names, we hear it every time we talk to each other.  Do you do that with your friends?  "Girl, check this out."  "Girl, what are you eating?"  "Girl, let me tell you."  If you don't you are missin out! Girl.

And here is the final item I found.  $8 bucks for each of these is a great deal.  Don't they look like the ones from Pottery Barn.  Maybe for the kids bathroom with extra towels in them for guests or for my son who takes showers without looking to see if there is a towel and then yells for you to bring one.  Now that I am typing this, I think I will have to swing back by and pick them up.
