Modern Dining Room Design Plan

I'm back!  I've been missin in action off and on for a few weeks due to an overloaded schedule, but we are nearing completion on a couple jobs so I feel like I am able to carve out a little more time and get back to my regular blogging schedule.

Today I wanted share a recent Design Package that I recently completed for my client Nicole.  I have worked with Nicole before to makeover her living room.  So this was exciting for me to come up with a plan for the adjacent dining room.  Nicole wanted to pull in the grays and then add some splashes of turquoise.

This is the plan I came up with...

The Bar Height Table is already a piece that my client owns, but she wanted a different fabric for the chairs, so I chose a gray and white modern fabric to recover the seats.

This is such a cute pattern from Waverly Fabric.

Kenroy Home Bronze Gilt Finish Whistler 3 Light Pendant
To keep the clean modern lines I chose this sleek pendant light.  I think the combination of metal and the linen fabric together keep the space contemporary and warm.

Horizon Lines I - Flushmount

For the artwork, I wanted to make it the statement piece in the room.  I not only wanted to pull in the colors of the room, but pull in some colors from the kitchen and other adjoining rooms on the first floor.  I recommended that Nicole turn the artwork sideways so that the lines are vertical on the wall instead of horizontal like you see above.

LIATORP Sideboard IKEA Cord outlet in the back. Keeps all cords in one place. Adjustable shelves can be arranged according to your needs.

For the unit to store their dishware and dining needs, I chose a sideboard with glass doors and open shelving in a white finish.

One other piece of artwork for the room is this gorgeous medley of metal circles that has a really pretty shimmery finish in silver and gold.  This fun piece ties in well with the metal of the pendant light.

Here is one last look at all of the mood board pieces brought together to create the design plan for the dining room...

Beachy Living Room with grays and orange!!!

Are you ready for a little beach vacation?  I know I am.  Although I can't take one right now ;-), I figured I could live vicariously through a Beachy Design Board that I created for two clients who are ready to feel like they are on vacation without having to leave their house.

Gabby and Brandon love the feel of the coastal and beachy style!  So, I created a Design Board that allowed them to have some of the feelings of the beach in the comfort of their own home.

It is amazing to me what a color can do for a neutral pallet!  It would still be relaxing and soft with the grays and tans, but the orange just brings it to life.

Here are a couple pics of the room BEFORE...

I didn't get great shots of the room when I was there, but I got a couple just to share with you the room before they start transitioning it.  Just off to the right is the fireplace and then a shorter blank wall to the right.

On this back wall, since they are young newly weds, I recommended that my clients create a gallery wall of black and white wedding photos.  When I met with them and we looked through some of the items they had collected, I noticed that they had some beautiful photos from their wedding.  I just thought they needed to be displayed instead of kept in an album :)

I left the room with an open flow and brought in an L shaped sofa to give as much seating as possible.  Above the console table is where I suggested they put the picture gallery.  Then they can bring in lamps to flank either end of the console table...

Threshold Wire Cage Lamp with CFL - Clear/Black
I love the mix of metal and glass!  It just looks like bubbles trying to escape to me.

My favorite piece in the room is the coffee table...

I LOVE it!!!  Again, a really cool mix of metal and wood.  I really like the finish on the table too!

I received word back yesterday that they love it and thought it was beautiful.  That means a lot!  Thanks guys :)

If you or anyone you know would like a Design Board Package created for them, please contact me at seasideinteriors01@gmail.com

If you refer someone and they book a Design Board Package with me, then you will receive a $25 VISA gift card!!!

Kitchen and Pantry Makeover

Hey guys, I had mentioned last week or so that I was creating some design boards for a mom in Oregon.  I finished work on her Family Room Design and after getting great feedback on it, I quickly got started on the adjacent kitchen and pantry.

Anna has two boys running around the house, so she wanted to keep the fun and lively feel going into the kitchen while still not losing the style and feel she is going for.

Working in the existing space, I wanted to give the room some character, but not have it feel completely different from the Family room.

To do that, I kept a similar color scheme.

Here is the finished results of Anna's kitchen design board...

Source List

I went with a different shade of gray from the Family Room.  For the kitchen I decided on Knitting Needles by Sherwin Williams.

I also went with the same gray curtains as the ones I chose for her Family Room since the large window in the Family Room and the sliding glass door are both close to each other.  When looking in from the hall, I wanted it to flow well from one area to the next.

Threshold™ Jacquard Ikat Window Panel

My client has a kitchen table that she would like to repurpose.   I suggested painting it in a white finish and having the golden honey colored rug to go underneath the table and a smaller mat size to go by the sink in the same pattern.

Since she wanted fun, I thought maybe the pantry door would look great in a shade of turquoise like the inspiration photo I found from Tater Tots and Jello.

To tie in all of the colors from the design board and pull the curtains and even the wall color into the mix, I found this ADORABLE fabric from fabric designer Deborah Edwards.  It is so fun and playful! Anna is going to turn into a window valance to go above the kitchen sink.

Deborah Edwards - Feathered Friends - Vines in Multi

I chose a canister jar set in the same honey color to bring some of the color on to the counter top.

3-Piece Canister Set (box Set) in the Sorrento-Wheat (gold) pattern by Signature

For the back splash tile, I went with a simple white mosaic tile that I think will compliment the cabinetry well.
Merola Tile Metro Hex Matte White 10-1/4 in. x 11-3/4 in. Porcelain Mosaic Floor and Wall Tile

I think one of my favorite finds was the kitchen typography artwork for the walls.

ON SALE Kitchen Art Print - Chevron, Baking Utensils, Zigzag Stripes - Set of 3 - 8X10 - White, Bondi Blue, Orange, Apple Green - No. KB008

I recommended that my client stick with the turquoise chevron background for both pieces of artwork and then choose which kitchen utensils and phrases she likes best.  The Whip it Good one would either have me singin the "Whip It" song or my version of the Salt and Pepper song "Push Whip it Real Good, bom be dom bom be de de dom.  Either way, I'm sure my kids would be THRILLED with me singing "Whip It" every morning.  I'm gonna go with probably NOT, since my aunt so lovingly told my sister and I we sound like to Bleepin cats getting burned on a stove when we sing.  Aww, I love those truthful family members!

Anyway, I think the artwork is so much fun :-)

These will go on either side of the sliding glass door to give a punch of turquoise color to that area.

One of my favorite spaces to come up with some fun organization and design ideas is the pantry.  Check back for my next post on the cute little Pantry Makover Design I created for Anna.

Have a great weekend!!!

Pottery Barn and Ballard Designs on a Target Budget

Happy Easter!!!   Hope you guys are having a great Easter weekend.

I thought today I would share one of several design board packages for one of my clients.

Most people are on a strict budget when it comes to decorating their home.  I know I am!   I am always  going for a high end look on a low end budget.  I splurge when I can if it comes to a statement piece, but the rest of the time I try to cut corners by doing DIY projects and finding knock-off versions for less.

I was recently contacted by Anna who lives in Oregon with her kiddos.  She wanted to have Room Board Packages, completed on a smaller budget, for several rooms in her home.

So we got started on the Family Room first.  Anna wanted it to be comfy, cozy, and family friendly.  She was not afraid to do DIY projects or find things second hand and re-purpose the items.   I designed the room around the idea that some items such as her coffee table and the fireplace would become DIY projects.

Here is the Design I came up with to accommodate her family...

Source List and Hints and Tips

White Bookcase

One of these on either side of the fireplace to balance out the wall over there.  Great to put some baskets on to store the kiddos toys, books and games.

Silver Mirror

To go above the white bookcase on the left of the fireplace.  It will mimic the window on the right to give the feel of a second window.

Basket for throws or kids toys

One of these next to the tv unit to put your throw blankets in or for more toy storage.

Ikea Frames
You will need three gray frames for over the tv unit.  Maybe some black and white photos of the kiddos to go in them.  Put the first one up centered over the tv and then space the other two out about 6 -8 inches away.

Artwork

This print is expensive so since you don’t mind doing a diy project, I would head to the craft store and get a canvas and some deep yellow, gray, black, brown, and white paint and a few brushes and just have some fun creating something similar to this.  I always add a tiny bit of black to colors like the yellow and mix them together so that they are not too bright.  Then for the gray you can mix in a bit of white to lighten it up.  I would do two different shades of gray and gold to add a bit of depth.  If you mess up, let it dry, and go over it a bit in the areas you don’t like.  To get the black trim around the edge when you are all finished painting it and it is completely dry, use some blue painters tape and a ruler and tape it off and then paint the black around the trim and on the sides of the canvas.  Just have fun with it.  Make sure the canvas is large enough to fit in that spot over the fireplace.

Rug
Definitely check craigslist or Homegoods for one.

Cloche
Would be nice on a console table behind the couch or on the coffee table.  Homegoods sometimes has them too.

Side Tables
On clearance right now for $55
One on either side of the couch.

Lamp Shade

Lamp Base

Curtains
If you don’t like the gray, You can even just do a plain linen colored curtain.  Check target they have them.

Pillows

HINTS AND TIPS
I tried to go with as much of Target’s version of Pottery barn style that I could as far as pricing for you.  Things like the storage baskets for the shelf or the larger one in the design board can be found at Homegoods, TJMaxx, or marshalls.  The pillows are a bit of a splurge but if you can’t purchase them then also check Homegoods,  Tjmaxx, and marshalls for similar ones.  Items like the bookcases might be found at Goodwill or other thrift stores.  Just make sure that they fit the space well.  You want them to have a built in look so as close to the size of the space as possible.  You may just need to put a coat of white paint on each one if you find it at a yard sale or something.

I would paint your tv unit black and get another two of the brown basket that you have on the left of the tv unit in the picture you sent me to add to the unit.

I would also suggest finding a simple shaped rectangle console table painted in a natural wood to go behind the couch underneath the windows.  You can put a few stacked books off to the right with a cloche on top of the books with some greenery underneath the cloche.

I would paint the coffee table white if you are keeping it as is with the glass in it or I would paint the legs and base a dark brown, have a piece of thin luan wood cut to fit (lowes does the cutting for free or extremely cheap for you) and then do a diy tufted ottoman like this link: http://www.homewithmandy.com/2012/02/diy-coffee-table-to-ottoman.html

I would do a plain linen colored fabric with the brown legs base.
Put the white dish on the top of the right bookcase and then the vase on the top left of the console table that’s behind the couch.  Add some fake branch flowers similar to the ones you can find on pottery barn.  I know that Target is currently selling the cherry blossom type branches in store so you may want to check them out.

Bring in your clear glass candle holders to reuse and put them on the top of the white bookcase that is on the left side of the fireplace.  Put the larger candle holder far left and have the smaller one just next to it put more forward than the larger one.  Fill the vases with Epsom salt and candles.

For the fireplace, you can take off the top shelf piece and replace it with a large piece of reclaimed wood or get a piece of lumber cut to fit from lowes or home depot and stain and paint to look like reclaimed wood.  For the sides of the fireplace, I suggest framing it out similar to the picture I chose for the design board and then adding new tile in the sea glass color that I suggested.  There is also subway sea glass if you would like it to look larger.  I can send a link to a couple of the sea glass ones that I like if you want to go with something like that.  For demolition, all of the original tile will need to be taken down.  It would be great if you could take the wood look all the way up and paint it out white like they did in the image.  Depending on the amount of work you feel comfortable doing, you may want to hire someone complete the fireplace project for you.
If you have any questions regarding anything, please feel free to contact me, thanks so much, Helen

The After pics of Anna's Family Room are not here yet since she is in the midst of the Family Room Makeover, but here are some of the Before pics she sent me so that I could get started on the design...

This is the wall looking into the room.  Anna was really hoping to change up the fireplace design. Since there was only one window on the right, I came up with a design that would balance the room out by placing a bookcase on either side of the fireplace and adding a mirror on the left hand side to give some reflection similar to the window on the right.

This tv unit will be painted black and will possibly have some black and white pictures placed inside gray Ikea frames on the wall above.

The white sheers will be replaced with these pretty gray Threshold drapes from Target.

Threshold™ Jacquard Ikat Window Panel

Here are the Target bookcases that I think will fit well on either side of the fireplace.

Threshold™ Cottage 2-Shelf Bookcase - White

Last One-Both Sides-19x19-(fits 20X20 Insert)Decorative Pillow Cover-Geometric Diamond Print Home Decor Fabric-Turquoise-White-Throw Pillow

A fun patterned pillow that will accent each end of the couch.

Black Walls Rustic Fireplace

Here is the inspiration for the fireplace.  Although Anna doesn't need the pretty platform base, this will at least give her the option to create a similar finish to her fireplace.

Next up is the post for the kitchen and pantry design to accompany this family room!

Giving the Kids an Updated and Colorful Bathroom Makeover!

We decided to take a family vacation this weekend and we traveled to Snow Shoe West Va.  Where it was 2 degrees at times with a wind chill that put us in the negatives!  I pretty much ran back inside after two trips down the mountain.

The kids on the other hand where so much braver than I was.  They had a blast learning how to ski and today the weather was great!  The sun came out, the temperatures rose up to the 40's, and I was able to stay out a little longer and ski.  So now as my family heads back out in the cold evening weather to get in their last ski session, I decided to put a little time into deciding some things for my upcoming project that I am really happy about...  THE KIDS BATHROOM!

Here is a photo of the bathroom...

Actually, right now we have a plain white plastic shower curtain hanging up since my husband thought this one was not "kid like" and he took it out.  So a blob of beige and white is what we are actually working with.  The floor is laminate, but I am hoping to do a gray slate tile floor.

VIA

We previously did this type of board and batten treatment in our First Floor Coastal Bathroom Renovation and still love how it looks!  I figured with some silver hooks and numbers, just like the amazing photo above, both of my kiddos and a guest could have their own towel hook.  The guest meaning my sister who likes to use the floor as her towel holder ;-)

Here are my choices for wall colors:

Martha Stewart's Azurite by Home Depot

Repose Gray By Sherwin Williams

Paint Color SW 7015 Repose Gray from Sherwin-Williams The colors of 100% of our walls in the new house.

I'm leaning towards the Repose Gray since I think it will give more of a contrast against the navy and white striped shower curtain.

What do you think of the look of two shower curtains instead of one?  It just turns your bathroom into a picture window basically and I kinda dig it!  Plus as a bonus, my kids would like it, since they are sorta scared of closed shower curtains, lol.  They always push open the curtain and I always close it so I can see the pattern, so now we could all be happy.

I wanted the West Elm Navy and White shower curtain, but realized if I was going to do two curtains, I would need to go with a more budget friendly option, so I chose Target's striped Navy and White Shower Curtain for $14.99 each.

Sorry the photo is blurry, but it was taken with my phone that apparently had a lovely smudge across the lens.

Pinned Image
Here it is online, although I couldn't find it on Target's website, it is in stores.  It is a cotton blend material.

What I thought I would do to make it more of a custom made piece is add a solid piece of navy blue material to the bottom of each curtain so that the Navy blue piece will go up to the top of the bath tub and the striped material will go the rest of the way up.  It's the same affect that you give to windows to make them feel much larger than they really are.   To give you an example, here are the curtains that I had made for a client recently for her Living Room Makeover

The sandy beige color meets the steely blue tone right at the window sill where my navy material will meet the navy and white striped material at the top of the bathtub.  I think it will make everything look finished off.

I can't wait to get in there to start making some changes, freshen things up, and make it really nice for my kids!

I am going to put together the design board for it in an upcoming post and also give you all of the sources for the items and supplies that I purchase for the room.  Take care for now!

Target is calling!

Where did I go yesterday?  Say it with me..... TARGET.  How did you know?  Well, it was either there or TJMaxx or HomeGoods.    And well, I kinda went to TJMaxx too, but it is only for you guys that I jump into my car, drive all the way to the store, and walk down all those isles of pillows and rugs and accessories.  OH THE AGONY!

Naaaahh.  It's really for me!  Sometimes I just love to go to a place where you don't have to hear, "MOM, did you sign my homework?"  "Mom, why is my smoothie so watery?"  "Mom, why did the dog just leave poop streaks on the side of the couch."

See what I mean, so Target just quietly calls to me, "Helen, come, relax and stroll around with some coffee."   OK Target if you insist.

So yesterday, I went with my dear friend, our coffee's in hand and found some new things that I really liked.

Disclaimer:  These shots were taken with my phone and the phone may or may not have had a coffee finger smudge across the lens.

Curtains/Shower Curtains

If I've said it once, I've at least said it twice.  Right?  Nate Berkus gets me, he just gets me!  Softness, color, and texture.  That's all I ask for Nate and you deliver.

This here is navy and white striped shower curtain that said, "take me home, I will look great in the kids bathroom."  Apparently a lot of decor and stores for that matter just seem to talk to me.  And yes I do answer back, cause that would be rude if I didn't.

So, I brought him home.  The first room in transition is the kids bathroom.  The walls are beige  the counters are cream, and the current shower curtain is white.  Blahh!  I am thinking this shower curtain, some board and batten, hooks for towels.  I think a design board is in order.

These are not large, they are little clipboards that I think would go great at the bottom of your organizational command center.  You don't have an organizational command center?  What is wrong with you ;-)  I don't have one either, YET.  You could give each person their own. Use them for permission slips, things to be signed, lunch money, receipts, whatever.

I'm thinkin, kids art space to hang all of their masterpieces. Or maybe on the bottom of a cork board so kids can hang photos of them and friends.

This is the mirror I want.  I can use two of them side by side in my master bath or the kids bath instead of the big huge rectangle plain mirror if the size is right.  They may be a smidge small.  Say that 5 times fast, Smidge small, smidge small... You know you're doing it!

My friend near took out a lady passing by just to get to this beauty.  Target is catchin on to all the DIY windows people have been creating.  I saw a repurposed one the other day full of mirrors.  It was so pretty.
This one would be great with a black and white pic in each window frame or one large black and white pic behind all four frames.

Citron, Celadon, Celery stick, I don't know what you would call that color, but I like it.  It gives me the feeling of spring.

It's like someone walked around my house, picked out all of the colors and threw it on a shade.  Ok I love it!  It's springy, it's beachy, it's me.

I like all three of these pieces.  The one in the middle is a brighter yellow in person.  I think any of these would spruce up a place and look great on a shelf.  Don't you?

Particularly this one!  I would love this in my kitchen or on my reclaimed wood shelving in my morning room.  What shelving you say?  Exactly!  I still haven't gotten around to it, but I will very soon, hopefully ;-)

Let's head over to TJMaxx!

Horrible picture clarity I know, but look past that and see what this subway art said to me.  "Eat dessert first" and "Say yes to chocolate."  Is it sad that these are the first sayings that caught my eye and not "Take the High Road" or "Win with Grace."  If you have seen me play basketball and win against my neighbor, who always puts up a fight, well you would know why "Win with Grace" is not on the top for me.  I rub it in with that girl every chance I get.  And now thanks to my husband, who so kindly pointed out that her and I only call each other "girl", instead of our given names, we hear it every time we talk to each other.  Do you do that with your friends?  "Girl, check this out."  "Girl, what are you eating?"  "Girl, let me tell you."  If you don't you are missin out! Girl.

And here is the final item I found.  $8 bucks for each of these is a great deal.  Don't they look like the ones from Pottery Barn.  Maybe for the kids bathroom with extra towels in them for guests or for my son who takes showers without looking to see if there is a towel and then yells for you to bring one.  Now that I am typing this, I think I will have to swing back by and pick them up.

Thanks for going to Target and TJMaxx with me!  I had a great time!!!
