Movie Theater Basement Design

It's a dream of ours to have a movie room in our basement.  We have a storage room off the basement that Dustin wants to turn into a movie room.  Every time, and I mean EVERY time, we watch a movie in the larger part of the basement, my husband says "Can't wait till we can sit in the movie room."  Ahh, One day!

Well for now, I get to live vicariously through my most recent design project.  A MOVIE THEMED BASEMENT!

I was contacted by my client to turn her basement into a comfortable space where her family could relax, watch movies, and play games.

Here is the design I came up with for Jennifer, her hubby, and their two daughters...

My favorite piece that I came across has to be the director's light.  I found this one on line.  Since I get the opportunity to do this basement install along with creating the Design Board Package, I was able to shop around for pieces for the room and came across this exact one for almost half the price online!!  Yay!

Another neat find is this abstract artwork on canvas.  One is kinda cool, but when you put three together like in the Design Board above, to me it looks like what you see going across the screen when the movie reel is finished.  That may just be me though ;-)

Red Liberated 20" x 60" Printed Canvas
To soften and lighten up the sofa, I chose a couple toss pillows...

CC Home Furnishings 18" White "Life Is Beauty Full" Decorative Down Throw Pillow

This one has a cute message.

Nate Berkus™ Geometric Toss Pillow - Gray (18x18")
The other for it's bold geometric pattern and color.

No Movie Room would be complete without movie reels or hot fresh popcorn...
$179.oo Ryan's entertainment rm- Ballard Designs Film Reel Plaques - Set of 3

These are just some of the items going in the space.  Other items will include a new reclaimed wood mantel for the fireplace and new rug like this one below...

Rugs USA Aperto Outdoor Moroccan Lattice Grey Rug

Here are a couple of the before pictures of the room...

The red sofa and ottoman will be staying.  The curtains will be replaced with new velvet gray floor to ceiling blackout drapes.

On each side of the fireplace will be low bookshelves.   To go above the bookshelf will be over-sized framed black and white movie posters like this one of Marilyn Monroe...

So am I excited to do this install?  Yessireee!!!

Can't wait to share with you all of the before's and after's...

Have a great rest of the day!

Dining and Living Room Transformation

I hope you had a great weekend!  Is it just me or is summer flying by for you?  It's seriously the middle of July and I feel like the kids just got out for summer break yesterday.  This coming week is a mix of things for us.  We are finishing up painting a client's home and installing the finishing touches on Friday.  The kiddos bathroom is just about complete. FINALLY!!!

So to finish things off my daughter and I are going to have a little fun painting today and I am going to do two pieces of artwork for the bathroom.  I am hoping to share pics later this week on the DIY Artwork and Bathroom Makeover.

For the Design Board side of things, I completed the last portion of a first floor home makeover that I am excited to share today.

I have been working with Anna for several months now, helping her transition her home into something she truly enjoys coming home to.  Anna wanted the living room/dining room side of the house to be a little more of an adult space.  She wanted it to be simple yet classy.  This is the Design Package I created for her...

Living Room Space

Dining Room Space

I always have a lot of fun putting together design packages, but this one turned out to be one of my top favorites.  I think maybe because of the color combination and feel of the different wood finishes that make it feel like such a warm place to be.

The great thing about her design is that it is a low budget makeover.

Here's a little look at some of the pieces that I chose for the dining and living room space...

Sawyer 1-Light Pendant

The wall art for the dining room...

Antique Resin Tile Wall Sculpture - Distressed

And the wall art for the living room...

Leaf Burst Wall Sculpture
Three of these guys will go over the sofa.

I also love the pillows for the space!

Throw Pillow Cover. Decorative Throw Pillows. 18x18 pillow covers. Tan Ikat Pillow ONE 18x18 printed fabric on front and back

Decorative Pillow- 20x20 Purple Pillow- Lavendar pillow, Cream Pillow, Geometric Pillow

Here are a few of the wood finishes that I think go well together...

A coffee brown side table that will add a little funkiness to the living room area.

A really lovely two toned brown sideboard to store all the dishware for the dining room.

white dining table

And to finish the space off, I suggested that Anna paint her existing dining table in white.

Threshold™ Slipper Chair - Yellow/White Trellis

Two of these golden yellow patterned chairs will add extra seating to the space while also bringing in a nice geometric pattern.

So how will all this furniture and accessories be arranged?

Here is the Room Layout that I think will best suite the space...

And here are both Design Boards again...

Hope you enjoyed this weeks Design Board Package.

Preteen/Teen Loft Space Makeover!

To me it is always fun to work in a multi-functional space.  When I was contacted by a recent client, she asked me if I could help trouble shoot her loft area and turn it into something special.  Suzanne's son is at the age of Lego's and drawing and having a space that fits his needs.  When I saw the space I was going to be designing for, I knew almost immediately that it would be a great transitional space for her son to enjoy through his teen years.

This is the design I put together for their loft area...

For the space itself, the clients were wanting to keep the wall color as it was, so my job was to work around that and bring in some fun things that would allow the wall color to be fun but not overbearing.  By bringing in  a lot of white furniture pieces, it will lighten the room up immediately.

My favorite find for the room is these Amazing game controller wall decals...

I came across these while looking for some fun additions to my son's bedroom and I thought that they would fit their son's loft space perfectly!

Another item that I thought was fun and funky was this throw rug...

EIVOR CIRKEL Rug, high pile IKEA The dense, thick pile dampens sound and provides a soft surface to walk on.

A fun piece to ground the space!

This loft area was very cut up and had some unique, to say the least, angled walls.  So I put together a Room Layout as part of Suzanne's Design Package.

I created three different zones that will allow for playing, crafting, and gaming.

In the furniture placement, I created a visual for the client of where to put everything.  The detailed description of where everything goes along with all the hints and tips comes in the Source List that I send the client.

So now when I speak about furniture placement in zone 1 on the source list, Suzanne can just refer back to the Room Layout to get the visual.

Speaking of zone 1, here it is.  The red sofa is getting sold so that will no longer be in the space.

Then all we need to do is Scooch the tv down, add a larger media unit underneath the television and put the controller decals on either side of the wall to finish it off.  Throw in two over sized Navy Bean Bag cushions and it's a place where their son can have a blast!

This area is zone 3.  All of this furniture will be put back in to the spare bedroom to allow for a desk and two units, one on either side of the desk.   The desk itself is being repainted black and the units are something the client owns.  The black units are similar to these...

Threshold™ Carson 2-Shelf Bookcase

I want this area to be a spot to do homework and craft, so I added in wall storage like these...

These will go above each unit to store all of his craft supplies and instead of ribbon, I suggested using brown wrapping paper so that he can pull it off the roll and create things with it.

In the middle of the wall units to go over the desk, I suggested a framed out chalkboard, so that he can either draw or keep notes and memos as he gets older.

To left on the lower wall here...
I suggested using two clip rails to display all of his artwork like the image below...

This area is zone 2.  Again all of this furniture will be placed back in the bedroom off to the left there.  So we are working with a blank slate.

In this area, I suggested we put the fun rug, along with a large white table to play on, and 6 of these black chairs so that all his buddies can hang out...
JULES Visitor chair IKEA The chairs are stackable and save space when not in use.

Along the back wall where you see the picture frame, I suggested that they add floating shelves to display some of the Lego's that my client's son likes to create.  He is like my son and likes to build them and look at them.  I was the total opposite as a kid, I built something, looked at it for a bit, smashed it, and tried to build something even bigger.  None of this put it together and be done, lol.

Under neath the floating shelves, I went with the Ikea Expedit Shelving to add storage and counter space for lamps and other toys...
EXPEDIT Shelving unit on casters IKEA
One in the 8 and squares and an additional one in the four squares to extend down the wall.  I also recommended using straight legs that Ikea offers instead of going the route of stubbing your toes on the casters.  I am a clumsy girl, so I know that I would go flying over these!  Just sayin!

Finally, off to the right on the angled wall, I suggested using the Ribba Picture Ledges from Ikea.

RIBBA Picture ledge IKEA The picture ledge makes it easy to vary your favorite motifs as often as you like.
To create a library area to display books and underneath I suggested a large sea grass style basket to keep all the extra books.

And here's one more look at the overall Mood Board for the space...

I hope you liked seeing the space and the Design Board Package for it.

Sand and Sea Beachy Living Room in Navy and Turquoise!

The Design Board Package I wanted to share today is for a family with three little girls.  I was contacted by mom Lisa to help with their living room makeover.  Lisa mentioned she loves the beach and wanted the room to be full of energy.  She described her family as being very active and explained that her girls are sports lovers, but also like to be girly girls so they wanted the space to be vibrant in color while having a laid back vibe.  Lisa also loves the saying "Sandy Toes and Salty Kisses" and was hoping to have that incorporated into the space.

Here is the Design Board I came up with for Lisa, her hubby, and their little girls...

Some of my favorite pieces in the room...

My inspiration for the room began with this Ikat pillow!

Lisa wanted to relax, so why not kick your feet up on this coffee table while watching television?

This will be a DIY project that Lisa will create to go above the fireplace.

A brand new entertainment center to store all of the girls toys and family game needs.  This is a great storage piece to keep everyone organized.

As part of the Design Package, I put together the Layout of the future family room, so that Lisa will know where to place things when she puts the room together.

For some reason I can pull up the file to the largest size, but here is the Room Layout that I created for Lisa and her family.  There is really only one wall that the television could have gone on because the wall where the back of the sofa is sits an open pass through.

Here are a few of the pictures that Lisa sent to help me get a better idea of the room layout...

This will be the wall where the white entertainment center will go.

A view from the upstairs.

Lisa mentioned that they where going to take the cues from the design board and implement it in their kitchen with new paint and decor.

This wall has a pass through on either side so not really a good place to put the television.  Plus the fireplace is on the other side, so seating would have blocked the fireplace if everyone faced this direction.

Having lots of pictures always helps me get a sense of the room and allows me to see any potential problem areas in the space.

The Design Board Package like Lisa's, includes a Design Board, A Room Layout for furniture placement, and a complete Source List that has all of the items that you see in the design board in addition to several other items and many hints and tips to complete your room makeover!
