Surprise Woodland Baby Nursery Transformation inspired by Dwell Studios Owl Sky Bedding: Part 1

We have a lot of favorites when it comes to Room Makeovers it can be hard to pick which one.  To come up with a design and be able to see it come to life in a client's home is fantastic!  Without the technicalities it's exactly like being pregnant.  We get to see it grow from start to finish and at the end we get to deliver.  Well a room not a baby, but see Exactly the same ;)

Did I hear you ask what the bonus is?  Yes you're right.  No morning sickness, no stretch marks, etc.  So it really is a win win for us.  So all this talk about babies and deliveries brings us to this point...

I was contacted by the sweetest lady Joyce to create a baby nursery for her grandson and to surprise her son and her daughter in law with a lovely place to relax with their little guy when they come to visit.  The kicker was the surprise had to happen for Christmas since they were coming for a visit which meant, we had little time to pull it together, so I got crackin' on the design and here is what we came up with for the space...

It all began with the bedding.  I LOVE owls and as I was putting together a sort of woodland theme space, I came across this owl bedding from Dwell Studios.  It is gorgeous!  The colors where perfect and I loved the large print pattern for the blanket.  The only problem was what I thought was a crib blanket in the design board above was actually a duvet cover folded over the crib for picture purposes, so when it arrived with a play blanket with very small print needless to say it was not what I was hoping for.  No problem, I ordered the separate duvet and a white crib down comforter and had an exact replica of the design board one created and as a bonus the baby could use the original play blanket on the floor to play.

Below is a closer look of some of the items we picked and a few AMAZING pieces that you don't see in the design board...

All the different owls and the trees are great too!  Again the blanket on the left is a folded duvet which is way to big for a crib, but if you know someone who sews or can do it yourself then you can create the crib blanket.

To hold this lovely bedding, we went with this gorgeous white detailed crib.

Alternate View

For the walls we went with a soft beige with a gray undertone, so I chose this rug to be a nice coordinating pattern for the bedding and to compliment the bedding and the walls.

Reflecting Pool Ovo Table Lamp

We chose a pool blue color for the lamp and it was the perfect match for the bedding!

3 Store By Numbers Cube Bin
To finish off the bookcase I chose a few of these linen style number baskets and some soft green ones to mix together for toy storage.

For a little spot to relax, I chose this Rocker Glider and and wood stump Side Table...
Wingback Convertible Rocker

Natural Tree Stump Side Table

To finish off the rocker, of course I couldn't leave out this little guy...
Owls Sky Boudoir Pillow

And to add a punch of color I chose this pouf below...
Kelli Knitted Pouf, Grass Green

Here are a few of my favorite things (You can repeat that as though Mary Poppins just said it ;-)...

Bird Branches Coat Tree
This little birdy coat hanger is beautiful in person.  Made of wood with little cut out details and a little bird to top it off.   We picked up a hand knitted cardigan to accessorize the coat rack and to keep the little guy warm.

Anytime you can get things handmade for a space, to me it makes it that much more meaningful.  So of course I jumped over to Etsy and purchased a few great things.

This little hedgehog made by bakerbaby was so lovely!  He had a nubby back and corduroy ear and finished off the look of the crib.

Hedgehog Nursery, Woodland Nursery Decor, hedgehog pillow, brown nursery

We loved this little block set below from BetsysWood...

N U R S E R Y // Owl Blocks (Customize colors) nursery gender neutral nursery child grow wise rustic yellow turquoise brown

And last but not least, since this family has been waiting so long and have gone through a lot to have this little guy, I came across this sentiment below and knew it needed to be in the space...

The ORIGINAL Some Things Are Worth The Wait - 24x24 Wood Sign - Rustic - Nursery

A wooden sign stating "Some Things Are Worth The Wait."
I contacted the seller PamelaJoyceDesigns and she was so gracious to create this in record time and have it to us before the install.  Thanks again Pamela!

When I stopped in to visit with Joyce and get a look at the space, I took a few before pictures of the room.  The room was being used as an office/storage space originally and it was the perfect spot for a little nursery since it is adjoining the guest room where Joyce's son and daughter in law stay.

Here are the BEFORE'S

This door leads to the guest suite for his parents.

There is definitely a lot of angled walls to consider with the layout and placement of items.

Oh, nearly forgot to show you the ceiling light we are going to switch this one out for.

Springfield Drum Shade Semi Flush Ceiling Light
I love the Bronze and Linen look of this one and want to bring in some much needed light to this room.

Below is a look at the proposed layout.

Don't miss PART 2 when we reveal the finished nursery!

The Best Sign Ever! I might be Biased!!

The other day I was heading to my dentist appointment and on my way there I spotted something just off the road at our local antique store.  You know when people say, "It called my name, I just had to have it?"  At least that's what I usually tell my husband. ;-)   Well, this thing really did call my name!!

My last name :-)

See what I am mean about being a little biased, lol.

I did a double take when I drove past and thought how cool it would look in our house.  Our name on a restaurant sign.  I was so excited, but then I thought where the heck would it go?  It is quite a large piece so I wanted to make sure there was a spot for it to fit.

I wasn't able to make it back until the next day to have a look at it.  The lady that works at the shop was so excited to see that I was a Williams.  Apparently she wanted to call all the Williams' in the phone book.  Thankfully I made it there in time before she actually went through with it, lol.

I decided that the sign would go great in our dining room.  My husband met me at the Antique Shop to have a look at it and he thought the piece would be great for our house.

The sign came out of an old restaurant not far from where we live!  It has such character.  If you look behind the Williams' Restaurant sign, you can actually see that it was a grocery store before that.  It was called Williams' Grocery and underneath it, it had the words Drinks-Ice-Meats.  If you look even closer, their was a business there before the Grocery store, but I have yet to make out what that one says.

For our dining room, I want to go with a board and batten treatment like we have been doing in other parts of the house.  Then adding this tin sign just above the board and batten would be perfect!  I want sort of a bistro style in the dining room with a coastal influence.  Ya know, the very popular Bistro Coastal Farmhouse Style!  That's the one ;-)

This is one of those pieces that might go into one of my kiddos homes as they are older and then they can share where it came from, or I might just get buried with it, because what better way to go out other than thinking of Restaurant food, lol.

So, besides the tin sign and board and batten treatment in the dining room, we have a few other things we want to add.

This past weekend, we made another trip to Ikea and came back with this bad boy for the dining room...

STORNÄS Buffet IKEA 2 smooth-running drawers with ball-bearing slides and pull-out stop. 3 drawers with felt strips underneath so they slide smoothly.

Although in this picture, it is quite brown.  In person, it is mostly black with just a hint of brown.  Here it is all  relaxed in its new home in the dining room...

Even in this picture taken with my phone, it looks somewhat brown, but I promise it is really more black, lol.

My plans are to get baskets to fill the shelves below.  To go above the buffet, and to keep with the feel of a bistro style restaurant, I want to do a large chalk board trimmed out in reclaimed wood or wood painted to look like reclaimed wood ;-)  Whichever fits my budget.  That way I can put menus up on the chalk board for quiet dinners or maybe a little ladies get together with a specialty drink recipe to try out.

We also managed to pick up the dining chairs, except for one small hiccup.  One of the chairs had black legs when they should have been white.  We would regularly improvise and just paint them white, but since we are going back in several weeks to get the cupboards for the office, we thought we would see if we had enough patience to wait it out and exchange the chair.  So far, Dustin is doing well with that plan!

Here are three of the four chairs at the soon to be repainted table...

I was thinking of sanding the table and doing a gray wash on it.  So wish me luck on that.  I am really nervous!  At least if I mess it up, I can just paint it a solid gray or black.  I like to have a back up plan knowing things might go wrong on the first try.

In place of the current chandelier, I decided to bite the bullet and get the chandelier I have been wanting.  With a 10% off coupon, I went ahead and purchased the Eclipse Chandelier from West Elm.

Eclipse Chandelier

I really like the bubble effect on the glass and just the curve and style of it overall is so neat!  It should fit nicely in my new Restaurant ;-)

Well, that's as far as we have gotten in the dining room, but here is a little sneak peek on the kiddos bathroom makeover that we are currently working on...

The tile floors are in and hopefully the board and batten trim work and mirror framing will be finished today.

I really love how the floor turned out and can't wait to get the kids back in here using their bathroom.  I thought it would have been crazy having all of us using my bathroom the past few weeks, but it has worked out fine.  SO FAR!

Pop back in tomorrow for the quick tutorial on putting together garden beds!   Have a great day!!!

Navy and Yellow Guest Room

I know, I know...  I have been working on quite a few Nautical Styled Designs for myself and several clients lately.  BUT, well, they are one of my favorite designs and I think that you can't go wrong with a Nautical kinda coastal vibe when decorating.

I hope you are enjoying some of the different variations I have been putting together for this style.

I think the feel of a Nautical room can be accomplished with many different pallets of color such as the most popular Navy Pallet like this Dining Room Design Board or something a little softer like this Nursery Inspired Design that I recently created.

So, here's the shocker.  A local client of mine that I have been working with for a little bit now has asked if I would help with her guest rooms and Jack and Jill bathroom.  One guest room is near completion and just needs a few finishing touches while the other guest room was just waiting for a Makeover.  So she said, Helen I'm thinking Nautical for this room.  Ahh, music to my ears!

This is the design I came up with for her and her husband...

Source List

Navy Chair from Ethan Allen

Wall Stars

Magnifying Candle Sconce

Clear Glass Lamp Base

Navy Lamp Shade

Side Tables

Baskets
They come as a set of two baskets but I did see some really cute baskets at Homegoods last night for a lot less so I would suggest checking that section out when you go over.

Lanterns

Map

Jan wanted it fresh and relaxing so I went with all white bedding from West Elm.  Since there is a little nook, I chose a large plush Navy Chair from Ethan Allen to fit in the space.  I also chose a Vintage Style Map to be framed from the places that this couple lived.  I think if you are going to bring in Art like this, why not make it personal to the family.  The map will fit nicely in the nook area too.

The two types of material that I chose fit the Nautical feel but are not too themy.  Is that a word, Themy?  My auto correct says no, but I think it should be ;-)

The striped material will be brought in on the window treatments and the kinda funky navy and white fish scale material will be made into a throw pillow for the Navy Chair.  What do you think of the material?  Are you more of a subdued kinda person, a little bit funky, or a mix of both when it comes to picking materials for your home?

She really liked the idea of having a star of some sort in the room, but I didn't want it to feel so gimmicky, so I found a set of muted toned stars that I think will blend pretty well with the space.

My favorite item that I came across is the Magnifying glass candle holder from Pottery Barn that mounts to the wall.  I may have squealed when I saw it!

Repose Gray is one of my new favorite grays and I tend to use it anywhere I want a lighter shade of warm gray, so we are going to paint both Guest Rooms in Repose Gray and go a shade or so darker for the adjoining bathroom.

When I sent Jan the Design Board Package, this was her reply...

Helen,

I love it!!!  Everything about it is just perfect.  You definitely know my taste.  I like the stripe fabric for the window treatment and the other fabric for pillows.  It will be a lovely room.  My guests will not want to leave!

Jan

It's good to know I was on the right track with what she envisioned for the room.  I am completely thrilled that she loves it and can't wait to get in there to bring this room design to life.  So keep a look out for those posts in the coming weeks.

Giving the Kids an Updated and Colorful Bathroom Makeover!

We decided to take a family vacation this weekend and we traveled to Snow Shoe West Va.  Where it was 2 degrees at times with a wind chill that put us in the negatives!  I pretty much ran back inside after two trips down the mountain.

The kids on the other hand where so much braver than I was.  They had a blast learning how to ski and today the weather was great!  The sun came out, the temperatures rose up to the 40's, and I was able to stay out a little longer and ski.  So now as my family heads back out in the cold evening weather to get in their last ski session, I decided to put a little time into deciding some things for my upcoming project that I am really happy about...  THE KIDS BATHROOM!

Here is a photo of the bathroom...

Actually, right now we have a plain white plastic shower curtain hanging up since my husband thought this one was not "kid like" and he took it out.  So a blob of beige and white is what we are actually working with.  The floor is laminate, but I am hoping to do a gray slate tile floor.

VIA

We previously did this type of board and batten treatment in our First Floor Coastal Bathroom Renovation and still love how it looks!  I figured with some silver hooks and numbers, just like the amazing photo above, both of my kiddos and a guest could have their own towel hook.  The guest meaning my sister who likes to use the floor as her towel holder ;-)

Here are my choices for wall colors:

Martha Stewart's Azurite by Home Depot

Repose Gray By Sherwin Williams

Paint Color SW 7015 Repose Gray from Sherwin-Williams The colors of 100% of our walls in the new house.

I'm leaning towards the Repose Gray since I think it will give more of a contrast against the navy and white striped shower curtain.

What do you think of the look of two shower curtains instead of one?  It just turns your bathroom into a picture window basically and I kinda dig it!  Plus as a bonus, my kids would like it, since they are sorta scared of closed shower curtains, lol.  They always push open the curtain and I always close it so I can see the pattern, so now we could all be happy.

I wanted the West Elm Navy and White shower curtain, but realized if I was going to do two curtains, I would need to go with a more budget friendly option, so I chose Target's striped Navy and White Shower Curtain for $14.99 each.

Sorry the photo is blurry, but it was taken with my phone that apparently had a lovely smudge across the lens.

Pinned Image
Here it is online, although I couldn't find it on Target's website, it is in stores.  It is a cotton blend material.

What I thought I would do to make it more of a custom made piece is add a solid piece of navy blue material to the bottom of each curtain so that the Navy blue piece will go up to the top of the bath tub and the striped material will go the rest of the way up.  It's the same affect that you give to windows to make them feel much larger than they really are.   To give you an example, here are the curtains that I had made for a client recently for her Living Room Makeover

The sandy beige color meets the steely blue tone right at the window sill where my navy material will meet the navy and white striped material at the top of the bathtub.  I think it will make everything look finished off.

I can't wait to get in there to start making some changes, freshen things up, and make it really nice for my kids!

I am going to put together the design board for it in an upcoming post and also give you all of the sources for the items and supplies that I purchase for the room.  Take care for now!
